On a scale from 0 to 10, I’m more than willing to give inflatable stand up paddle boards a 10 for transportability and functionality.

I am not, by any means, going to compare inflatable boards with authentic ones because we are way passed that. We all know that hard boards have so much to offer but it’s nothing like iSUPs’ features, options and qualities.

On this review, we are going to have a closer look at one of the Jimmy Styks’ iSUPs; the Thresher. I’ll give you my word for it; this board is not a toy, this board is made to conquer the water.

Measurements

The Thresher is 10.8 feet long, 31 inches wide and almost 6 inches thick, and in my opinion, this size is one hell of a good one for almost everyone. In other words; you can get this board whether you are still on the entry level, mediocre or even advanced.

The fact that the Thresher is 31 inches wide and 6 inches thick makes it one of the best iSUPs that you can get your hands on, because with these dimensions you’ll gain a great amount of stability. It’s actually a fact; the wider and thicker an iSUP, the more stable it will be.

Concerning what you could find on the market, these measurements are the best you could get for any iSUP between 10 to 14 feet long. Also, looking at the Thresher’s design, you will notice that it has nose rocker which main purpose is to keep the board safe and undamaged if it happened to bump into rocky shores.

Quality

This board’s construction is flawless; you won’t find any glue marks or messy edges. The Thresher is made of nylon, PVC material and drop-stitch core. This latter consists of a top and bottom fabric layer held together by an array of nylon “tethers” that allow the cavity to hold high levels of pressure while maintaining form and rigidity.

These materials come in the shape of different layers that are put together to present a durable, light and stiff inflatable board that can be easily taken anywhere.

Features

Like most quality iSUPs, the Thresher is featured with numerous details that actually make it a good one. Well, you’ll get to decide yourself as we start tackling each feature in this part of the review. The Thresher is featured with:

A high quality traction pad that covers half its back. It’s so thick it adds to the stiffness of the board. Yet, it’s so soft I give you my word for it; you won’t get tired of standing or kneeling on it. The pad also covers the part where you can put your cargo using the bungee system so it leaves no chance for it to slip off.

Speaking of which; the bungee system consists of 4 durable stainless steel D-rings and they are connected with a bungee cord so you can secure any cargo (coolers, sandals, gear…) that you might need on board. You’ll find a fifth D-ring on the board’s tail to attach a safety leash if desired.

Three carry handles are to be found on the Thresher; one is central while the other two are located on the sides. They are rigid and made to make carrying the inflated board an easy thing.
The navigation system is represented to us with one large central fin which is, like usual, removable for easy packing once the board is deflated. Just to make sure; be careful not to lose the screw that secures the fin to the board. The Thresher does a good job tracking with this fin, and it is also not hard to control and steer.

Packaging

The Thresher comes in one of those satisfying packages with everything you could think of to handle an inflatable board, so along with it you’ll find:

A 2-piece adjustable travel paddle; it’s made of aluminum and it floats. It’s not the lightest paddle out there but it’s highly functional it can suit anyone’s height. Also, it is featured with a T-shape grip to get a comfortable and firm hold of it.

A hand pump with gauge which will enable to pump the Thresher in 5 minutes if you do it hard. It’s a workout if you ask me but the pump works as it should and it can inflate the board up to 15 psi.

You’ll also find a 10 feet coil leash which is pretty awesome. Wearing it, you’ll never be away from your iSUP. It’s durable and very comfortable to wear.

A repair kit is included but I hope you won’t need to use it being a friendly user.

Finally, the Thresher comes with its own carry backpack for maximum transportability. The bag is well-made as it is also big enough to carry the deflated board along with the other items. The shoulder straps are large which results in a very comfortable usage of the bag without hurting your shoulders.

Performance

The Thresher is best made for novice paddlers, thus you can tell that it is structured to be more stable compared to other performance’s aspects. However, it’s responsive and easy to control especially on flat water. This board can take up 270 lbs and still hold a firm and rigid posture. As for speed; it’s not the fastest you can get but it is absolutely a good start for a beginner.
